Anna Couani #56

I remember hot days
like today
but I forgot
the misery

in my memory
that really hot day
in the early 60’s
was dry
when I fell out the window
caught my arm in some rope
that worked a window
came in contact
with the cotoneaster
finding all those red berries
and their pungent juice

also that frangipani
on the path
the way it bled white
and the way we
often snapped bits off

the sharpness of the buffalo grass
on a lawn that sloped too sharply
to play on
picking off the purple flowers
of the lantana
flinging them in the air

then there was dandelion
dock weed
onion grass
paspalum
privet

inedible fruits

bitter leaves
