Susan Hawthorne #120 Persephone

Persephone was picked up at the pub
she hadn't been on a grassy hill
with flowering hyacinths for years

but it made no difference
no difference at all
he eyed her off    approached

soon he was plying her with drinks
telling her of his flying lessons
and his grand cliff-side house

she didn't remember leaving
woke much later in a dungeon
with candelabra on the walls

he brought her red wine
when she got up to leave
he barred her way    said

sorry girlie you're staying here
confused she fell asleep
next day the same the same

it was months before they found her
curled in a corner    trembling
her mother barged in    but

life is never simple and deals
were made over her shaking body
she left that day but was destined

to return again and again
the threats too great to risk
Hades sits in his corner smiling
