On entering a prosthesis room in a small clinic a former combatant of Angola's long-running civil war experiences phantom pain. He reeled back in pain as though he had been electrocuted pulling his shirt open in an effort to maintain his balance.

It took me a moment to believe you, Jack. What he's doing almost looks like dance, like theatre. How moving, as always.
ReplyDeleteHa, I hadn't considered that way before Lucy but yes, it could be a piece of theatre or even dance. When I was shooting it, I was playing on the juxtaposition of the artificial limbs. The phantom pain was completely spontaneous.

ReplyDeleteMuch of what one photographs in countries in conflict is Efi. Saying that, I was often humbled at the raw courage people had to continue. A seemingly irrepressible human spirit. I would secretly ask myself, if I would have the courage to do what the people were doing to survive? The answer was always a resounding - no.
